Dungeons of Daggorath

The 1982 DynaMicro dungeon crawler, rebuilt for the 512K Color Computer 3. The original maze, monsters, combat and heartbeat are all still there, and you can now flip between the classic 3-D wireframe view and a new full-colour top-down view at any time.

Download and run

Mount the disk on a 512K CoCo 3 (floppy, CoCo SDC, DriveWire, MAME or XRoar) and type:

RUN"DOD" CoCo 3 edition (top-down + 3-D) RUN"DOD1" the original game, unchanged

Loading the CoCo 3 edition takes about a minute from floppy because the tiles and sprites go into the upper 512K.

What's new in the CoCo 3 edition

  • Top-down view. A 320×192, 16-colour map of the dungeon around you, drawn from shaded tiles and sprites held in the extra 512K.
  • Switch views with F1 (or CLEAR). The switch is instant and the game remembers your choice for the next game.
  • Arrow-key movement. Up moves, down moves back, left and right turn. Typed commands like ATTACK, PULL, USE and INCANT still work.
  • Light follows the original rules. Your torch lights exactly as far as it did in the 3-D view and stops at walls and closed doors. Magical creatures still need magical light.
  • Remembered map. Corridors you've already seen stay on screen in faint navy so you can find your way back.
  • Same game underneath. The original 6809 code still runs the maze generator, creature AI, combat and timing. Only the drawing is new.

Controller support

Plug a joystick or two-button gamepad into the right joystick port (in an emulator, map your PC gamepad to the CoCo's right joystick).

The hand menu types the command for you, so it does exactly what the typed command does. Each hand's menu reopens on the last command you chose, so repeating ATTACK RIGHT is just hold, let go, press.
