Ghosts 'n Goblins CoCo3 demake

Sir Arthur is back in his armour, this time on a Tandy Color Computer 3. This is a demake of Capcom's 1985 arcade game for a 512K CoCo 3 with a CoCoSDC, built on the engine from my Metal Slug demake. The graphics, music and sound effects are converted from the arcade game, and the music and level stream from the SD card. All of stage 1, the graveyard and the forest, plays from start to finish. It runs on a 512K CoCo 3 with a CoCoSDC.

About the port

Ghosts 'n Goblins is Capcom's 1985 arcade game: Sir Arthur fights his way through a graveyard, a forest and beyond to rescue the princess from the demons. This demake for the 512K CoCo 3 reuses the engine from my Metal Slug demake, with the arcade's graphics, music and sound effects converted for the CoCo and streamed from a CoCoSDC.

What's in it so far

  • The arcade's title, coin and start screens, and the intro where Red Arremer carries off the princess.
  • All of stage 1: the graveyard, the hill and its ladders, the raft across the water, and the forest up to the Unicorn and the key.
  • Arthur's moves: run, jump, crouch, climb ladders and throw. One hit knocks off his armour and leaves him in his boxers; a second hit and he's a pile of bones.
  • Weapons: lance, dagger and torch, plus armour, coins, money bags and the other treasures.
  • Enemies: zombies that rise out of the ground, crows on the tombstones, man-eating plants, Red Arremer, flying knights, woody pigs, the Unicorn, and the magician who can turn you into a frog.
  • The arcade's music and sound effects, streamed from the SD card, including the stage intro jingle.
  • Score, 3 lives, extra lives at 20,000 and 70,000 points, and the two-minute timer.

Still to come: the attract-mode demo, the later stages, and more speed in the busiest scenes. In MAME it runs at 30 fps when things are quiet and 15–20 fps in crowded parts, while the game itself keeps arcade speed.
